Bells to Ring at Searles Today for Bombing Victims

Members of the public are invited to attend.

Following this afternoon's statewide moment of silence to honor the victims of last week's Boston Marathon bombings, Searles School and Chapel will participate in a ceremonial bell ringing.

The minute of silence, announced on Sunday by Gov. Maggie Hassan, will take place at 2:50 p.m., the time the two bombs went off, within about 10 seconds of one another.

Windham's Betty Dunn, who is working to coordinate the bell ringing, said that she will start ringing the bells at 2:51 p.m. All residents are invited to attend.

"I said you know – everybody is looking for a way to do something," said Dunn, who said she heard about the moment of silence this morning and later received the go ahead from Town Administrator Dave Sullivan.

Searles School and Chapel is no stranger to ringing its bells on monumental occasions. The bell tower recently chimed out to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook school massacre. Dunn also said she has rung the bells for the fourth of July. Many bell ringings take place by request.

"Is there a better time and place than a request like this," she said.
