Twitter Threat Made to Windham Schools, FBI Informed

Superintendent Dr. Henry LaBranche notified parents tonight.

WINDHAM, NH -- A Twitter threat originally thought to have been directed at the Windham, CT school district was actually meant for Windham, NH, according to an alert sent to parents by the school superintendent.

Dr. Henry LaBranche said in his alert that at 9:20 p.m. he was informed of a letter generated by the principal of a school in Willimantic, CT:

The letter explains that a tweeted threat, originally thought to be directed at their district, which is the Windham, CT school district, was not intended for them but for Windham, NH. Further the letter indicated that the matter had been referred to the NH State Police.

LaBranche confirmed in the alert that after contacting Windham Police, N.H. he learned that State Police were actually not informed until the Windham department did so earlier this evening.

The FBI has also been informed of the situation, and the investigation is ongoing.

The nature of the tweeted threat was not disclosed in the alert from LaBranche.

To prepare for Friday, which is exactly one week since the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy took place in Newtown, CT, LaBranche said that he has directed that there be a police detail at each school for the entire day.

"In addition, the department will continue the rolling patrols and will have an enhanced presence at all schools tomorrow," he said. "As I receive additional information it will be shared with parents."

This is the second scare that Windham has seen this week.

On Monday, Windham High was forced into a 25-minute lockdown after an administrator heard a loud bang in the main lobby.

What exactly was the threat.... That seems to be the unknown that has everyone in a toss-up about whether to send kids or not on Friday.

Hi Jeff, I wrote this to you in an email but I will post it here publicly. That information is not yet known. Due to the late hour, difficult to reach any members of the district. I will have follow-up as soon as I can but just wanted to dictate the limitations. Vague information at the moment.

Yes, I agree - we need more information. As of now, my 1st grader will be staying home. These poor kids went to sleep tonight so excited for their special class parties tomorrow. Little do they know of the world we live in. Ugh.

No problem Mike. It's just that the message and alert did not give any specifics about the threat. I know you'll dig in and keep us informed as usual. Thanks for all the fine work you do!!!!

Will police officers be at our private schools too?

I appreciate the heads-up from the school district and realizing they are doing the best they can in a very diffificult time and situation. However, it would be very helpful to have a bit more detail here to help parents assess risk. Was this a very generic threat (i.e. kids looking for extra day off from school) or something more substantial. I am not sure if I am sending my son to school today. I do not want to give into any fears, but also have duty to keep him safe!

It is difficult to feel good about sending kids to WHS at all this week when we still don't know what caused the "loud bang". If I knew that it wasn't a gun, I'd feel better. The fact that no one knows (or isn't saying) is disconcerting.

Between this and the rumor a few weeks ago about the Middle School Dance, it's about damn time that us parents get some real answers from the school district. It's extremely aggravating to not be getting real info about what's going on. Vague phone messages from the Superintendent are not going to cut any longer. Stop the nonsense and give us some information -- this is the information age, not the silent age.

I completely agree with you. I have a child in both middle school and high school and was also wondering what happened regarding the middle school issue. The rumors of what was the actual threat is very serious and I would also like to know that the students involved have been dealt with. Rumor has it that they have not and that is a very poor example.

I'm sending my 2nd grader but my wife will be driving her in so she can see what type of prtection there will be. I also would like to know what the threat is as this would help me make my mind up if we should really send her as she is excited about the party today. There is one thing for sure Daddy's little girl will be getting a big hug tonight

We sent our 5th grade granddaughter this morning to Center School. I agree 100% with the other comments, it would have been more comforting to know what the threat was specifically. I did call the Windham Police and the dispatcher who informed me that she would say it was pretty safe to send our granddaughter to school today. Lets hope we say the same tonight.

True the message last night seemed all was well, this morning, I reevaluated.. When they had the lock down , I called the highschool, and they lied to me stating it was a drill. I called WPD they told me the truth. Don't lock my child in a dark room and paper the windows, and then lie!

we didn't have a "lockdown" on monday... technically, it was "shelter in place" the lights weren't out, and teaching was still going on. the windows weren't blocked either.... but yeah it was not a drill.

How can they say the threat is not credible when they really don't have any information? My Brother in Law walked into GBS this morning and having no idea where the office was, took a wrong turn - walked down the hallway and realized he wasn't in the right place. He then came to the front lobby, walked into the gym - handed an adult a bag and left. No police presence, doors were not locked - no one questioned what was in the bag or who he was. That doesn't seem like security to me.

Hi WHS student. I understand, it is a form of a lockdown though. As mentioned by Tom Murphy when we first reported the story, the lockdowns at WHS have incremental categories. "Shelter in place" is just one. Interestingly enough, I spoke with Londonderry on Tuesday and they don't operate that way. It's just a straight lockdown.

but they have very different procedures. lockdowns generally mean there is an immediate danger within the building. shelter in place is basically protecting students and faculty from dangers outside the school or in this case, a possible but unknown danger.

Commended not Criticized.
I am very happy that the superintendent notified the parents and the public. I appreciate the fact that he passed the information along and I understand that it is not always possible to provide the public with all of the information. This is an ongoing investigation and it may be detrimental to the case to divulge too many details. We need to do all that we can to catch these individuals and determine if the threats are real. I think Windham has done an excellent job informing parents and making police presence a high priority in both of the recent incidents. It seems that many people are quick to criticize. I can only imagine the number of meetings, discussions, action items and stress that our school and town officials have been involved in over the past week. They have our children’s safety and the safety of the school and town on their minds at all times. That is a very difficult role to be in. They should be commended not criticized.

Finally, A reasonable person. The unreasonable people are the same that would scream and yell if the schools didn’t go into a lockdown because of a loud noise. The same people who would flip out because security was so tight that parents were not allowed into a building without going through a full screening process to drop of something for their students.

No offense, but I would thrilled if there was a full screening process before they let me or anyone to just walk into the school. I'm not trying to be an alarmist, but when it comes to my kids safety, I want the schools to go overboard when it comes to letting people into the school. Hell, I don't even care about the long security lines at the airport. I know everything can't be prevented and if someone is going to do something, they will figure out how to do it.
I know more about what goes on in the Red Sox clubhouse than I do when it comes to safety concerns at my kids school. That's pretty sad, in my opinion.

I agree with concerned parent. I know that we want to feel as if the schools are doing all they can to keep our children safe but I walked into the high school yesterday without being buzzed in because a student walking out let me in. Not knocking the officer that was in the office, but he was just sitting not watching the door at all. That didn't sit well with me. I do not feel once school is in session that anyone should be getting into the buildings. Have someone posted at the doors to take whatever needs delivering but no one should get into the school. It's scary to think that is what needs to be done, but I would rather be inconvenienced and have my child safe. I'm very glad I made the decision not to send my children to school.

No offense.. but did you want the officer to interrogate you or something? The officers are there to protect in case something happens and to monitor the doors. in addition, you can't blame anyone for letting you in except that particular student. im sorry but you seem extremely paranoid, and please realize that the school district and police are trying to keep us and faculty safe without completely messing with our daily life. schools need to function with somewhat of a regularity or else learning won't occur and the younger kids will know something is up.

How could you let the opportunity slip by to not educate that HS student on how important it is to not let anyone -anyone at all- into the building. Shame on you! You're the bigger piece of the problem than the security guard - who, by the way you certainly are knocking.

Money, Money, Money. Our town is OK with cramming our students into overcrowed classrooms. I don't think they will want to pony up the cash for full duty police officers in our schools.

I am truely amazed at what expectations some parents have. I commend the school district, the staff, volunteers and the Windham Police Department for the hard work and dedication they have shown during this tragic incident. Like any investigation the police need to deterime the factual evidence and not "leak" pieces before all they conclude what is and what is not real. Truely if a crediable threat was recognized we would not have had school today. I went to CS and GB today and found the presence of parent volunteers and staff at the entrance way. This was very comforting to know my children are safe today. Thank you to all those that volunteered today!

The events of the past week and frankly the past years, have made the jobs of all of us parents, educators, police, community leaders, etc. harder. It is absolutley fair to constructively challegne, ask questions of how we can all do better and drive for change. However, I agree I think that the police, school and adminstrators are moving in the right direction and doing their best during a very difficult time. That doesnt mean we shouldnt seek improvement, but I would like to thank everyone who is putting in an effort to make Windham a safer place. I for one would be very willing to help pay for a decated police precense in our schools, but I would also like to see the police redeployed from some of the construction details, etc.

Excellent statement, however, this thread started as nothing constructive, and basically screaming, yelling, and blaming.

Remember when you were afraid to go to Nashua or Manchester following the 9/11 attacks? Frightening your children and yourselves with internet rumors is not helpful.

The most dangerous thing you could ever do to your children? Put them in your car. Over 2,000 children are killed each year. Yet, you the nervous posters, have driven your loved ones several times in the last week (and you should and have to).

If anything had actually happened, the school and PD would tell you. Responding to baseless hysteria is an impossible task.

A threat was made to Tottenville HS on Staten Island and not 1 cop was present and not 1 phone call from the school. Do a search on Twitter for Tottenville and read the tweets for the last 2 days. Thank God nothing happened. I had to keep my kids home today because of this.

Lift the ban on weapons at all nh schools so licensed citizens, including teachers and administrators can carry concealed. The easiest place for a coward to attack is a school. Reverse your psychology and protect your valuable assets. Don't get sucked in by our federal government that weapons are the cause of this. Sick people that belong in nut houses are the blame. Don't forget to get the latest video games for your kudos either!
