Jazz Brunch and Art Show Auction to Take Place Today
The event will start at 11 a.m.

A tasty brunch buffet, smooth jazz and fine art all add up to a delightful event hosted by The Windham Endowment for Community Advancement today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Windham High School. “It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Diane Carpenter, president of the organization. “We have added some different things this year.” The second annual Jazz Brunch and Art Show Auction will also coincide with the school districts student art show with pieces from students in grades kindergarten through grade 12 on display in the high school’s foyer. Gourmet Bites of Salem is catering the event and there will be live entertainment provided by the Windham Actors Guild and the talented musicians of Windham High. Abigail Anne Newbold, the artist behind the special exhibition Crafting Settlement, will demonstrate her artistic process and answer visitors’ questions. Some very talented students from the Londonderry Dance Academy, many from Windham and Londonderry, will be performing in two very different programs this weekend. “A Child’s View of the Holocaust” will be performed once again by the New England Dance ensemble for Londonderry Middle School Friday, May 3, and again at 7:30 p.m. at the Londonderry Dance Academy at 21 Buttrick Road for the public. “A Child’s View of the Holocaust” is an original drama ballet choreographed in 1990 by LDA’s Artistic Director Barbara Mullen. The production recognizes the atrocities that occurred toward Jews at the hands of the Nazi party in Germany between 1939 and 1945. Windham High School Dean of Arts Jared Cassedy was completely taken by surprise when he received a letter telling him he had been nominated for 2014 New Hampshire Teacher of the Year. But the Salem native is quick to acknowledge the source of his success when he explained what the nomination means to him. "The most exciting part about this nomination is that it's a showcase of what my students have done and accomplished over these past years," said Cassedy. Those achievements included a trip last week to the WorldStrides Heritage Performance Festival of Gold in Chicago, where the WHS concert band netted top honors. The Orchestra Hall at the Chicago Symphony Center was the backdrop of a major milestone for the Windham High School concert band Monday morning as the students took home top honors at a national festival. At the WorldStrides Heritage Performance Festival of Gold, the group finished as the top scoring concert band out of a field of four. The victory came by a single point. "To receive the highest score out of these ensembles means the absolute world as there are a multitude of extremely talented organizations performing in this festival," said Band Director Jared Cassedy. The well-loved story of “Cinderella” will be on stage in a musical production with music by Richard Rodgers, and story and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Windham High School Theater Company will present the fully staged production with a live orchestra Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m. “We have a cast of 20 which includes the major and minor rolls, townspeople and dancers,” said Tess McKinley, and English and drama teacher at Windham High who is directing the play.
