Windham Bids Farewell to Longtime Fire Chief Today

Funeral services planned today for Windham's first full-time firefighter. That and four other things you should know today.

1. Farewell to a fire chief. Former Windham Fire Chief Stanley J. (Jake) Mackey, 83, passed away Oct. 4 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. He became Windham's first full-time fireman back in 1966, and worked his way up through the ranks, becoming fire chief in 1978. He retired in 1989 after serving the town for 30 years. A funeral service is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Searles Chapel at 3 Chapel Road in Windham. To view his full obituary, click here.

2. Harvest Fest this weekend. The annual Harvest Fest at Griffin Park will be held this Saturday. The Doggie Costume Parade begins at 11:30 a.m., followed by an afternoon of fun. The day ends with the business trick-or-treat from 3 to 4 p.m. Contact the Recreation Department at 603-965-1208 for more information.

3. Calling all book worms! 
This is the second of three weeks that a book sale is being held at 58 Range Road (around back) to benefit NH Foster Parents. The sale runs each Wednesday through Friday – Oct. 9-12, 16-19 and 23-26 – from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Paperbacks are .50 cents and hardcover books are $1. You can also fill a bag for $5. Author Carolyn Coppola of 'Minivans, Meltdowns, and Merlot' will be signing books the on the 19th and 26th, from 12-2 p.m. For more information contact Raeann at 890.2474 or raeannkeeley@benchmark-office.com.
