Windham Sisters Use Love of Baking to Support the Troops!

Last fall, fourteen year old sisters Alexa and Olivia Munroe were baking cookies when they saw a news story about a soldier home for Thanksgiving.  It was a short leave for the soldier, but he stated he was happy he was taking something back with him overseas to remind him of his family and home, boxes of homemade cookies.

Alexa and Olivia wondered if there was some way they could bake and ship cookies for troops currently deployed, to cheer the service people stationed so far away from their loved ones. They turned to the internet, where they discovered Operation Baking GALS.

Operation Baking GALS (Give a Little Support), is a group of volunteer bakers from around the country who bake and ship homemade goodies every month to our heroic military men and women currently deployed.  The goal of Baking GALS is to send a little bit of home to remind them that we appreciate all that they do for our freedom.  The concept is simple.  Each month a new Round of Baking GALS teams opens. Each team consists of a team leader, a hosted  military service person, and up to 20 volunteer bakers. The goodies are baked and shipped within a week.  The goal of Baking GALS is to have LOTS of goodies delivered, essentially bombarding the service person with a taste of home.

For February, the service person Alexa and Olivia chose to host is a US Army soldier currently deployed in Afghanistan.  His spouse is active US Navy, also currently deployed.  Alexa and Olivia’s homemade goodies off to their service person include eight dozen cookies, two dozen brownies and six Carlo’s Bakery recipe crumb cakes.  The girls use their own funds to add special items to the packages, including candy, gum, a soft new pillowcase, new socks (the soldiers love new socks and pillowcases) and always something for a little fun, this month it's twelve cans of silly string.

Anyone interested in joining the girls to spread a little cheer to the troops, can contact them at spiritbakers@gmail.com.
