Longtime Cobbett's Pond Resident Maintained 'Turtle Rock' for Years

Windham woman had a love for animals.

Obituary obtained from Dewhirst Funeral Home:

Barbara E. (Feugill) Graichen, a resident of Pleasant Valley Nursing Home in Derry, NH for the last several years, left this world Thursday on the same day that she was born into it, 87 years later.

Barbara was born and raised in Methuen and later moved to Cobbett’s Pond, Windham, NH where she and her late husband Warren E. Graichen resided for the majority of their years together. Those familiar with Cobbett’s Pond are well aware of “Turtle Rock”, which was lovingly maintained for many, many years by Barbara and Warren.

For many years, Barbara worked at H.K. Webster, Sears, Roebuck & Co. and later at Granz Power Equipment, Salem NH, from where she retired.

Barbara had a true love of all animals. Abandoned cats found a kind word, a loving touch and a much needed meal from Barbara while small chipmunks, squirrels and songbirds found small treats for themselves that she lovingly gave them and in return they offered her many hours of entertainment. Barbara had a deep love for dogs and was the proud owner of three English Pointers over the past thirty-plus years. She was a strong advocate for spaying and neutering to control unwanted and abandoned pets. Over the years, several dogs found their way to Barbara’s back door, where she spent endless hours finding them warm, caring and loving homes.

Together, Barbara and Warren would travel throughout New England to various states where they would often visit small ports, villages and communities along the coastline. Barbara loved surf casting and deep sea fishing, and never missed the opportunity to drop a line in the water whenever possible.

Family and friends have wonderful memories of spending hours and hours at the pond, where all would enjoy a cookout, a refreshing swim and a beautiful sunset over Cobbett’s Pond. The sound of Barbara’s laughter is embedded into the memories of all those who knew and loved her.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband Warren E. Graichen, her mother Beatrice (Howlett) Feugill, her father Harold Feugill and a sister Beatrice (Feugill) McCormish.

Friends may call Wednesday, 9:30 to 11 am at the Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen, MA. Funeral services will be held at 11 am in the funeral home.
