Body Recovered in Portsmouth Believed to be Jonathan Zygmont

Zygmont, a University of New Hampshire student, went missing earlier this month.

Authorities said a body recovered from the Piscataqua River Sunday morning is likely Jonathan Zygmont, a University of New Hampshire student who went missing earlier this month.

"The young man has not been positively identified but a preliminary review suggests it is (Zygmont)," UNH police said in a statement Sunday. "The state medical examiner is expected to make identification in the morning."

The body was recovered near Prescott Park—where police said Zygmont was last seen Sept. 17.

Zymont, 19, of Windham, was a first-year student at UNH. When he was first reported missing, police said they did not suspect foul play. They said Zygmont may have been having relationship difficulties and was "despondent."

His mother said her son was an avid hiker and hoped he was somewhere on a trail.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this very difficult time, and will continue to offer our support to the campus community and Jon’s loved ones," said UNH President Mark Huddleston in a statement.
