Parent Meeting Monday on Golden Brook Mold Concerns

A parent meeting will be held on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

All first graders who had been housed in the modular classrooms at Golden Brook Elementary School have now been moved into the main building, according to Superintendent of Schools Winfried Feneberg.

The decision was made after roof leaks were discovered on Feb. 10, leading to suspicion that there could be mold in the portable classrooms. The leaks were found in two classrooms, and initially only students from those classrooms were moved into the main building.

But after further checking on Feb. 11, Feneberg said the decision was made to err on the side of caution and remove all eight first grade classrooms from the portable trailers.

"Obviously, they can only be accommodated by displacing other programs, consolidating and doubling up," he said.

Some art classrooms have now been put on carts, the occupational and physical therapy programs are now operating out of the gymnasium and special education and computer rooms are being used as classrooms.

"It's not conducive for first grade instruction, but we really didn't have a choice," the superintendent said.

According to WMUR, the school district has decided that it will move all third graders to the high school on March 3 to make room for the first graders.

A parent meeting will be held on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Golden Brook School to provide updates on the situation and talk about next steps and assessment.

The following night, at 6, the Windham School Board will meet and continue the discussion. At that point, Feneberg said, decisions could be made about what needs to be done going forward to address the problem.
