The Windham Fire Department responded to the house yesterday morning.
A Windham home was evacuated Monday morning after the owner reported that the house was struck by lightning, according to Windham Fire Chief Tom McPherson. Fire and police officials responded to 18 Orchard Blossom Drive at 11:45 a.m. The owner told officials that he could smell and odor and wood burning in the attic area. Firefighters reported no visible smoke upon arrival, but they also detected an electrical odor in the attic. After the home was cleared out, firefighters located an area on the roof where lightning had entered and traveled down the electrical wiring. The lightning strike caused several smoke detectors as well as circuit breakers to be damaged. Through the use of thermal imaging cameras, firefighters were able to determine…

The New Hampshire House of Representatives will open up session at 10 a.m. in Concord.

Members of the House of Representatives will vote on Senate Bill 152 during their session, slated to begin at 10 a.m. The bill calls for up to 150 table games and no more than 5,000 video lottery/slot machines at one casino location in the state By a 23-22 vote last week, a special House Committee of Finance and Ways and Means recommended SB 152 "inexpedient to legislate." The vote came after a slew of amendments were presented in the committee's morning work session that would have completely reworked the bill that passed the New Hampshire Senate with overwhelming support back in March. Former high school teacher Pat Conaway sees real hope in the young people who help him clean the area's trails, waterways and roadways.
Pat Conaway admits he is "kind of a nut" about the environment, so when he retired from teaching in 2008, it didn't take long for him to find a number of productive ways to spend his time. "I wanted to get people fired up about the environment, to try to encourage citizens to get involved locally," said Conaway, of Natick, Mass., founder of Big Hearts, Little Feet. A nearly constant presence on area roadways, trails and waterways, Conaway can be found leading groups of volunteers, including many students, to pick up trash, improve trails and remove invasive species. From beer cans to soda and coffee cups, trash tossed by the roadside washes into local rivers and, if left alone, eventually finds its way to the ocean, where scientists have…

The incident was reported at 12:33 p.m.
UPDATED (4:15 p.m.): The Windham Fire Department has reported only minor injuries for the driver involved in a 14-wheel dump truck crash on Rockingham Road Tuesday. Fire officials responded to the incident at 12:33 p.m., which took place in the area of Northland Road. The dump track had gone off the road into a swamp near Northland Road. According to Windham Fire Chief Tom McPherson, the truck appeared to have been traveling north when it crossed over into the southbound lane and down an embankment, ending up in an area of wetlands. No damage was done to the truck's fuel tanks. The driver of the truck was treated at the scene by Windham ambulance personnel but refused transport to the hospital. McPherson said that along Rockingham Road was…
The liquor license at the facility has been expanded.
Selectmen have approved the expansion of a liquor license at Park Place Lanes, allowing visitors to now have alcohol on the lanes while bowling. Prior to the expansion, residents were only allowed to drink in the adjacent Jonathan's Lounge or Alley Kat Grille. Windham Police Chief Gerald Lewis said that the expansion is commonplace in New Hampshire. "I did contact the state liquor commission and they indicated that most alleys in the state have that expansion permit into their lanes," he said. Lewis added that most of the management within those facilities are able to handle the situation pretty well. Selectmen approved the request with zero objections. Lewis said he will deliver the approved license expansion to representatives at the …

A signal at the intersection of the current Routes 111 and 111A is stirring up debate among business owners, land owners, traffic consultants, residents and others.
Time is running out for the Windham Board of Selectmen to decide on the future of a signalized intersection that has sparked interest in recent weeks among parties from every direction. Those stakeholders packed into Town Hall Monday night to discuss whether the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 111 and 111A should either stay put or be removed. Unless Selectmen act, the decision on the books requested by the town in 2002 is to remove the traffic light. But Selectman Roger Hohenberger, who served on the board at that time, doesn't think it was the right call. "I'm convinced the decision made 10 years ago is probably the wrong one today," he said, noting that the scope of development along that corridor was never anticipated. One …
