The town is reacting to issues that have happened in other towns in the past couple of years.
The Windham Board of Selectmen is taking a look at the town fireworks policy this year, specifically looking at how Class "C," or consumer fireworks are going to be policed going forward. According to Fire Chief Tom McPherson, an ordinance was adopted in 1989. He said the policy was repealed some time ago and that the town now hopes to work on the policy given recent incidents that have happened in other towns. In July 2012, a household on Dodge Road in Pelham saw almost a dozen people injured. That house reportedly had about 90 boxes of fireworks. According to McPherson, the goal in Windham isn't to stop the use of fireworks, nor does he think that the ordinance written in 1989 did that. McPherson said that the goal with that ordinance …

The Windham Fire Department responded to the house yesterday morning.
A Windham home was evacuated Monday morning after the owner reported that the house was struck by lightning, according to Windham Fire Chief Tom McPherson. Fire and police officials responded to 18 Orchard Blossom Drive at 11:45 a.m. The owner told officials that he could smell and odor and wood burning in the attic area. Firefighters reported no visible smoke upon arrival, but they also detected an electrical odor in the attic. After the home was cleared out, firefighters located an area on the roof where lightning had entered and traveled down the electrical wiring. The lightning strike caused several smoke detectors as well as circuit breakers to be damaged. Through the use of thermal imaging cameras, firefighters were able to determine…

UPDATED (4:15 p.m.): The Windham Fire Department has reported only minor injuries for the driver involved in a 14-wheel dump truck crash on Rockingham Road Tuesday. Fire officials responded to the incident at 12:33 p.m., which took place in the area of Northland Road. The dump track had gone off the road into a swamp near Northland Road. According to Windham Fire Chief Tom McPherson, the truck appeared to have been traveling north when it crossed over into the southbound lane and down an embankment, ending up in an area of wetlands. No damage was done to the truck's fuel tanks. The driver of the truck was treated at the scene by Windham ambulance personnel but refused transport to the hospital. McPherson said that along Rockingham Road was…
The liquor license at the facility has been expanded.
Selectmen have approved the expansion of a liquor license at Park Place Lanes, allowing visitors to now have alcohol on the lanes while bowling. Prior to the expansion, residents were only allowed to drink in the adjacent Jonathan's Lounge or Alley Kat Grille. Windham Police Chief Gerald Lewis said that the expansion is commonplace in New Hampshire. "I did contact the state liquor commission and they indicated that most alleys in the state have that expansion permit into their lanes," he said. Lewis added that most of the management within those facilities are able to handle the situation pretty well. Selectmen approved the request with zero objections. Lewis said he will deliver the approved license expansion to representatives at the …

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people, if the National Transporation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from .08 to .05. About 10,000 deaths a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American Beverage Institute called the proposal "ludicrous." It said the average woman could reach the .05 percent limit by having one drink. What do you think? Is the proposal reasonable? Vote in our poll below, and leave a comment with your thoughts.

The New Hampshire Police Association Pipes and Drum Band played "Amazing Grace" and other appropriate songs, the Woodbury Middle School chorus sang a medley of songs, and the Londonderry High School Marching Lancers also performed. National Law Enforcement Week continues …
