Several areas will be improved to beef up the district's emergency capabilities.
The Windham School Board voted 4-1 Tuesday to pay for radio system upgrades in the district through the use of the unreserved fund balance within the FY13 budget. According to SAU 28 Business Administrator Adam Steel, the district is seeking to upgrade several areas. "The goal of this process is for our public safety agencies and the school district to have a common communication scheme in times of emergency," said Steel. The improvement needs were first discussed by board members shortly after the Newtown, CT mass shooting that saw 20 students and six adults killed in December. Steel outlined the current needs in the district to the board, which include a licensed, repeater-based system needed in the four school buildings, a distributed …

The WPD response was the third in the last two weeks.
For the second time in as many days, police responded to gun shots heard near a Windham School, but unlike yesterday, Windham Center School also reported hearing shots. According to a message to parents from Windham Center School Principal Kori Alice Becht, a staff member reported hearing what seemed to be shots fired in the distance behind the facility. The incident was reported at 1:20 p.m. "In following protocol, the police were notified and began an investigation," Becht said. "We did not go into lockdown per the advisement of the Windham Police Department, and at 1:35 p.m. we were cleared to continue the day as normal." This was the third police response in two weeks to a Windham School and first at WCS. According to a message to …

Windham police are still investigating an incident that had many parents keep their children home today.
Police are still investigating a tweeted threat that was reportedly made against the Windham School District, and the department is telling parents that they do not believe the threat is credible. "We are in the process of trying to track down where these Connecticut schools got this information from and see if it's even legitimate," said Capt. Mike Caron. Caron said that the department does not have the original tweet, but that it appears that a parent or resident got a hold of it somehow online. At this point, he said the police details at the schools are a precautionary measure and the department is encouraging parents to bring their kids to school. "At this point there was no direct threat to any Windham school," Caron said, explaining…

The school board discussed projects that were actually in the works before the Newtown shooting incident.
Before last week's Sandy Hook shooting shook the country, the Windham School District was already planning projects to enhance security in the four schools. "We're moving a little faster now," said SAU 28 Business Administrator Adam Steel, who spoke about specific safety upgrades that will come to schools. The first two areas of attention are Golden Brook School and Windham Middle School. GBS, according to Steel, needs door replacements to the front of the building and to the portables. Those replacements include the frames. Steel said that as a response to the Connecticut tragedy, the doors to those schools and all others in the district have been locked, and a volunteer or staff member has to go let a visitor in. An automatic door system…

This week, school doors are locked and volunteers/staff are letting visitors in.
As part of a heightened school safety effort in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Windham has locked the entrances to several schools, requiring visitors to buzz in. People have also been at the entrances to let those visitors inside. With the increased measures, students at Windham High School still went through a 25-minute scare on Monday when a loud bang prompted a lockdown of the facility. Readers – We want to hear from you. What is the best permanent solution for the town and the school district? Currently the district shares one school resource officer. Should there be more? Should metal detectors be in all of the schools? Security gates? Bulletproof glass? Are the schools fine the way they are currently …

An expert shares advice for parents who are trying to explain the Newtown school shooting to their kids.
In the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting tragedy, parents across the country are wondering what to tell their children about what happened and how to help them process what they may be hearing from friends, on television and via social media. Lauren Hutchinson, LMFT is a child and family therapist and parenting consultant with a practice in Bellevue, WA. She says step one for parents is to “turn off the TV”. “We don’t want to have the TV playing in the background all the time. It isn’t helpful and the news is traumatizing for kids to watch.” For kids age seven and younger Hutchinson says, “you want to shield them from the media coverage completely and parents should not initiate a conversation about the event because kids this age …

On Saturday, we posed the question to our Facebook users.
On Saturday, we asked Patch readers whether they support a heightened police presence at Windham schools, or even the installation of metal detectors, and many were torn on the debate. As details continue to trickle out about the tragedy that took the lives of 26 people in Newtown, CT late last week, the finding is that the killer, Adam Lanza, blasted his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School. He was not let in, and the school had a buzzer system. That system, according to one reader, is also used at Windham Center School. "I love that Center School has the buzzer system," said Gina Wesinger-Deluca. "... we need to keep our babies safe." Another reader, Brenda Belfiore, said that the tragedy shows that a buzzer is not enough. "If a …

Someone with your education should know that what you do say is as important as what you don't say; and what you did have the 'kahonas' to say seriously tips your hand as to what you are thinking and I stand by my statement that that thinking and attitude is utterly deplorable and at the direct root of SAU 95's problems.   more ›
