State Police Team with Local Kids for Motorcycle Safety

Watermelons and motorcycle slides came together during a series of demonstrations at The Derryfield School in Manchester.

State police joined Manchester students and a particularly skilled motorcyclist Wednesday to demonstrate the importance of preparation and protection before hitting the road on two wheels. The Derryfield School, an independent private school for grades 6 through 12, played host to the afternoon event. Decked in protective gear from head to toe, professional motorcyclist and latin teacher Chris McNeil performed a "controlled crash" over gravel in front of dozens of students. Later, McNeil nursed some soreness in his hip, but said the injuries would have been much worse without protection. "(Without protective gear), I'm definitely going to the hospital, because I'm going to have road rash all over my body, and I'd potentially have a broken …

Milestone Track Meet to See Graduate Battling Cancer Honored

CJay DiPrima found out he had a baseball-sized mass in his chest on the Friday before Christmas.

A milestone track meet for both Windham High School and neighboring Pelham High School will see some big support thrown in the direction of a former classmate diagnosed with cancer. According to WHS track coach Ryan O'Connor, his kids are expected to wear neon green soccer socks as a sign of support for CJay DiPrima. The event will also be the first duel meet between the two schools. DiPrima is a WHS graduate and former track athlete who learned on the Friday before Christmas that he had a baseball-sized mass in his chest after getting a CT Scan. He was later diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma called "grey zone" lymphoma (stage 2). CJay's father Chuck wrote a heartwarming letter to friends and neighbors on Windham Patch in early …

Skateboard Park Progress Comes Before Selectmen Monday

Selectmen decided to close the park on Sept. 17 after several complaints.

Spring is here and the skateboard park is back on the Selectmen’s agenda. Recreation Director Cheryl Haas will update the board at its meeting Monday night about the progress a committee has made about coming up with suggestions on keeping the skate park open. “(The committee) was supposed to get back to the Recreation Department and Police Department before the spring, but this didn’t happen,” Haas said. “We had a meeting with one committee member and the police chief Friday.” The skate park, that is park of Griffin Park, was closed Sept. 17 last year after many complaints to police about skateboarders not wearing helmets. There were also complaints of foul language and trash littering the skate park. The selectmen voted 4-0 Sept. 24 to …

Departing Principal Murphy Lauded by Staff at Windham High

Those who worked with him say he was a supportive, professional administrator.

Windham High School Principal Tom Murphy met with staff members on Tuesday morning to deliver some emotional news – the school will have a new lead administrator next fall. In fact, July 1 will be Murphy's date of departure for Billerica Memorial High School in Massachusetts, which is his Alma mater and former place of work. There, he will also serve as principal. In the wake of Murphy being named New Hampshire Principal of the Year, his move is a tough loss for the young Windham High, but the faculty appear to understand the circumstances. English teacher Ryan O'Connor said he faced a similar decision when Windham High opened – either stay at his former employer of Londonderry High School or head back to Windham where he grew up.  Like …

Flu-Like Illness Seen More at High School

The epidemic sweeping the nation has caused 16 deaths in New Hampshire.

Influenza is all over the news this past week, with the number of flu-related deaths in New Hampshire at 16 according to state officials. Superintendent Henry LaBranche said while the elementary schools and middle schools have not seen a spike in absentees with flu-like symptoms, the high school has experienced increased absences. “Principal Tom Murphy at the high school indicated there are more students absent than usual and this may be from the flu,” LaBranche said. He also said high school-age students operate on minimum sleep and may be more susceptible to illness. “Of course, the parents tell me if we gave them less homework, they’d get more sleep,” LaBranche said. “It’s kind of a Catch 22.”  LaBranche said flu prevention methods are …

Slick Road Caused Bus to Collide With SUV

Windham Fire Chief Tom McPherson issued further details this afternoon.

The Windham Fire Department has released additional details related to this morning's school bus accident, saying that a slick road caused the bus to collide with an SUV. According to Windham Fire Chief Tom McPherson, fire and police officials responded to the scene on Beacon Hill Road in the vicinity of Tarbell Road at 7:43 a.m. McPherson said that on arrival, it appeared that the bus was unable to make the hill just prior to Tarbell Road due to the slippery conditions. "As the bus attempted to back down the hill, the bus slid slightly off the road," McPherson said in a release. "That's when the SUV traveling in the opposite direction spun out and collided with the front of the school bus. Emergency workers boarded the bus and determined …

Group Aims to Educate Voters About Need for New Middle School and Athletic Field

The non-profit group was recently organized and is chaired by three residents.

Concerned with overcrowding in three of the town’s schools, a new organization has emerged to educate residents about the importance of voting yes on a warrant that supports a new middle school and athletic field for the high school. The non-profit group called WINS – Windham Initiative for a New School – is chaired by Michelle Saklad, Kevin Lefebvre and Attessa Bradley. Currently grade three is split between Golden Brook Elementary School and Windham Center School and the middle school is not up to state standards, Saklad said. “Right now, there is no science lab or tech education at the middle school,” she said. The new proposed middle school would house grades seven and eight and be located on London Bridge Road, on land already owned …

Grass, Please NO ONE explains anything. You've heard, as have I, there are no bathrooms in the 'phased additions' (false). You know that I'm accurate at what a mess traffic will be on LBR when you collocate WHS and 'proposed middle school'. This will be daily, but also for any 'events'. Oh btw, we are going to cross the street to get from the school to the athletic fields. So how much logic was …   more ›
