Fire Breaks Out in Eating Area of the Common Man

The blaze was reported at 11:09 a.m. Tuesday.

Windham firefighters responded to a fire at the Common Man restaurant on Tuesday morning.

The fire was first reported at 11:09 a.m. at 88 Range Road, according to emergency radio broadcasts. Sprinklers were operating, and the fire was knocked down within minutes.

"It appears at this point that the sprinkler system held the fire in check," said Windham Fire Chief Tom McPherson. The fire was outside the kitchen in the seating area.

According to McPherson, only the head chef was in the building at the time of the incident. The chef was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene but refused hospital transport.

The restaurant was not open at the time of the incident.

Fire damage was held in check by the sprinkler system, and fire officials were on scene to help clean up other damage caused by the water and smoke.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and McPherson said that his department hopes to have more information later this afternoon.
